Day 51 Sunday 20th September 247km ( 16336km total)
3500m marshland, yaks & Tibetan prayer flags
- - - -
Sending this in two parts due to the chinese internet & the limitations of my route through the great firewall.
A great day's riding through the high plateau's just east of the Autonomous region of Tibet. The height varied between 3000m and 3800m with most of th day spent at about 3500m, so cold & crisp but also lovely & sunny.
I have seen these brickworks a lot over the past few days, looks to be a very manual process, the kilns are at the back and then the new bricks neatly arranged in rows by hand.
For the first half of the journey, the road wound its way between the peaks, with the lanscape reminiscent of parts of northern England ...... But a lot bigger & 4 times higher!
The sight of Tibetan prayer flags was becming more common, this village having a particularly impresdive display up the hillside.
In betwen villages was large wide open grasslands Sometimes with a small temple & prayer flags, apparently un the middle of nowhere. No-one was about so I stopped at one for a selfie
They really bring a cheery display fluttering in the wind. Apparently the different colours represent different prayers which will be carried by the wind to the heavens, and vertical arrangements have different meanings to horizontal.
To be continued ...
