Sunday 21st May - A rest day exploration - 142km (trip total 4508km)

H had fully recovered by the morning and was like a bee with a new sting, so raring to go!. Instead of having a rest day we therefore decided to go out and head south towards the desert. But first I had some planning to do as in last night's discussions we both felt we would like to do a bit more minor road work. So I cancelled the next day's planned trip to Erachidia and instead worked out a route through the Todra gorge and right across the High Atlas mountains towards Meknes. This would entail an overnight stop in the mountains on Monday.

Anyway back to today ...

We set off back down the gorge towards the main road.

still finding new sights to snap ...

At Boumalne we turned left along the main road which quickly became very straight & arid, but after 20km took the small road on the right south across the desert plain towards Jebel Saghro.

The mountains were a good way off and the area was very arid and hot with a constant hot drying wind blowing left across the plain, necessitating some leaning.

Very little about just the occasional hardy local traveller.

As we started to ascend, we came upon a double decker sheep truck - wondered how he got the sheep ip and down off the roof!

kugfkhgfkh

There was a bit more greenerey about as we climbed, finally to about 2200 metres, where we came to the village of Ikniouen.

Where we stopped at the local restaurant for some mint tea - the owner was very nice and interested in where we were going etc, refusing to take any payment.

The road beyone this chngedbto a sandy track and it was my turn to start to feel a little queasy feom the heat, so we headed back down towards the valley.

And of course the even higher temperatures!
